Will you actually make it back before dark?

This isn’t just a “distance ÷ speed” pace tool. It builds your realistic beginner pace, tells you when to turn around, checks it against sunset, and writes the check-in text you should send someone before you go.

Your pace profile

Be honest, not aspirational — this is what makes the timeline actually reliable.

Hiking with others?

Your group moves at the pace of its slowest member — add them here so the plan is realistic for everyone.

How this is calculated

Pace comes from Tobler’s hiking function (Tobler, 1993), a velocity curve built from real hiking data — it correctly recognizes that a gentle downhill is actually your fastest walking, not flat ground, which flat “add minutes per foot of climb” calculators miss. That base pace is then scaled by your honestly-reported experience level, your pack weight, and the terrain — because a confident 3 mph pace assumption is exactly why so many beginners end up hiking out in the dark.

  • Turnaround time uses the backcountry 50% rule: split your total safe daylight budget in half and commit to turning around at that clock time, not at a distance — used by search-and-rescue educators because it protects you even if you’re moving slower than planned.
  • Sunset estimates are rough seasonal averages for three US latitude bands, meant only as a starting point — always check your weather app for today’s exact sunset time.
  • Group pace takes the slowest reported experience level in your party, since that’s the pace a group actually moves at on trail.

This is a planning estimate, not a guarantee — weather, trail conditions, and how you’re feeling on the day all matter. Always tell someone your plan before you go, and turn back if conditions change.
